How to look after your vape’s battery

Whether you’re using a disposable or re-usable vape, if you know how to look after your vape’s battery it will last longer between charges and guarantee a smooth and enjoyable vaping experience. Here’s an easy-to-digest guide to help you keep your vaping batteries in top shape.

Which batteries should I use?

Go for known brands: Stick with trusted brands you recognise. Don’t be tempted to order cheap batteries you’ve never heard of before as there’s no guarantee they’ll be reliable, or even safe. Check out our selection of rechargeable vape batteries here.
Choose the right type: Look for high-drain batteries, usually labelled IMR or INR. These are designed for vaping devices.

How to charge your vape’s battery

Pick the right charger: Always use a charger that’s compatible with your batteries and made by a reputable manufacturer. Once again, cheap knock-offs on Amazon aren’t always what they claim to be. Take a look at our range of approved vape charges.
Smart chargers: Consider using a smart charger with overcharge protection, which stops charging once the battery is full.

Don’t leave them unattended: Never leave batteries charging unattended and avoid charging them overnight to prevent accidents.

Don’t over-drain your batteries

Set safe limits: Try not to let your batteries drop below 3.0V. Most regulated mods have built-in protection to prevent this. Otherwise, the simplest way to do this is to avoid waiting until it’s completely dead before recharging.
Check the voltage where possible: If you have one handy, a battery checker can be used to keep an eye on the voltage. This is especially useful if you’re using a mechanical mod. Many of our mods display the voltage on their built-in screen. Check out our range of vape mods.
Recharge promptly: As soon as your batteries hit low voltage, recharge them to keep them healthy and performing well. Batteries degrade most quickly when they are totally empty or full.

Maintaining your vape’s battery

Check it for damage: Regularly check your batteries for damage. Tears in the wrap, dents, or leaks can all be dangerous. Don’t chance it, replace damaged batteries right away.
Keep contacts clean: Make sure the battery contacts are free from dust or e-liquid to ensure a good connection.
Store properly: Store your batteries in a cool, dry place, ideally in a protective case, and avoid extreme temperatures and never keep them in direct sunlight. Be aware of where the sun comes into your home so you don’t get caught out.

Spare batteries

Use battery cases: Carry spare batteries in a plastic or silicone protective case to prevent them from touching metal objects, which could cause a short circuit, or from getting damaged.
Do not carry loose batteries: Sort of the same as our previous point but please don’t carry loose batteries in your pocket, purse, or bag as they could touch metal items like keys or coins, which can be very dangerous.

Marry your batteries

Pair them: When using more than one battery they should be the same brand, model, and age, otherwise they could discharge unevenly which can wear the batteries out.
Charge together: Always charge paired batteries at the same time to keep their voltage levels equal.
Use together: Keep married batteries together in the same device to ensure they discharge evenly and last longer.

Replacing batteries

Know when to replace: Replace your batteries after 6-12 months of regular use, or sooner if you notice they aren’t performing as well.
Look for ageing: Signs that it’s time to replace your batteries include longer charging times, reduced time between charging and overheating.
Track their age: Try to remember roughly when you got each set of batteries you use so you know when to replace them.

Recycle old batteries

Recycle properly: Don’t throw old batteries in the bin. Take them to a recycling drop-off. There are loads about, you can often find them in supermarkets like Aldi and Tesco.
Be environmentally friendly: Batteries contain dangerous chemicals. Recycling helps protect the environment by ensuring they are disposed of safely, otherwise they can end up contaminating the land and waterways.

To avoid vape battery overheating or, in (very) rare cases, exploding, follow these key safety tips:

      1. Use the right charger: Always use the charger that came with your vape or one recommended by the manufacturer. Avoid fast chargers or those with the wrong voltage or current output, as they can overload the battery.
      2. Don’t overcharge: Unplug your vape once it’s fully charged to prevent overheating. Some modern devices have safety cut-offs, but it’s best not to leave them charging overnight.
      3. Avoid extreme temperatures: Keep your vape out of direct sunlight or freezing cold conditions, as both can affect battery performance and safety. Ideal temperatures are between 10°C and 25°C.
      4. Check for damage: Regularly inspect your battery and vape for signs of wear, such as bulging or discolouration. If you notice anything unusual, stop using it immediately.
      5. Don’t use damaged batteries: If your battery is damaged or wet, replace it rather than taking any risks.
      6. Store safely: Carry your vape in a protective case, especially if you’re using external batteries, and avoid contact with metal objects (like keys) to prevent short-circuiting.

Following these steps ensures your vape battery remains safe and functional, and you stay in one piece!
